Both outlining and just writing are useful, and it is therefore a good idea to use both. Are you writing for research assessment? Gather your notes and findings and organize them in in a methodical way.
Ask a colleague or someone whose opinion you trust to read the article and give you an honest opinion. Check for superfluous words and jargon. It is normally easier to do this at the end, as you will then be clearer in your mind about the main points of your article.
Pitch your idea in a succinct way, as this will be your chance to impress the editor with your writing ability. The author should also follow the correct writing about a journal article of presentation and use the required format.
Use subsections to make your article clearer. Tip Polish the article as much as you can, as this looks much more professional to an editor.
Guidelines Familiarize yourself with the journal. Edit your article several times. Writing for a journal is usually closer to academic writing that you would do as part of a university course than an opinion piece or journalism. If your article was rejected, it is still useful to analyse feedback, work out why and revise it for somewhere else.
Ensure that you have included all sources. How long are the sections usually? Contact the editor with your proposal. Rowena Murray offers her top tips for how to start writing that paper. Pay particular attention to any articles similar to your own, especially those published recently.
At some point — ideally at regular intervals — you can get a lot more done if you just focus on writing. Set word limits for your sections, sub-sections and, if need be, for sub-sub-sections.
Goals that work need to be specific, and you need to monitor the extent to which you achieve them. The article should be written in appropriate academic language, without being heavy or difficult to read.
